Recently, I transplanted a scrawny little rowan tree from one yard to another. I’d ordered the tree as a bare root stick after reading Hamnet and against all odds, it took and grew at the house where we lived. Now, we’re moving (just in the neighborhood) and I could not bear the idea of leaving the rowan with all its O’Farrell and Shakespearean symbolism behind. I asked my realtor to list it on the exclusions and I replanted it at our new house as soon as we closed.
